Practicing the Distributive Property

I think you are really doing well “on your own” so let’s try another day or so. Today you should click on the link to the algebra textbook. When you get there, navigate to chapter 2 and find the video tutor for 2.5. It is listed under “my help” section if you click on animations. Go ahead and watch the video about the distributive property. Then you can click on the practice tab and try a few yourself.

When you have finished that, get an algebra and begin reading Chapter 2.5 on page 96. Do problems 5 – 20 on a piece of paper that you will turn into the HW basket. I will come by to check on you and see if you are doing well throughout the morning.

This is one of the most important properties you will ever use in algebra. I use it all the time to do my fast multiplication of 2 digit numbers. If you finish those problems, do problems 28-39. Did you know that the answers to the odd numbered problems are in the back of the book. Feel free to see how you are doing!

Day two for 18 people!

You did a great job on Tuesday! Now try day 2 of the challenge.

First try the link for the 2 step equation balance beam. It is similar to what you were doing on the balance beams on Tuesday, but this time you move the pieces yourself to solve the equations.

2nd go to the Algebra, Geometry, and more link. That takes you to an algebra class online. Go to chapter 2 and try Pattern Sleuth. I think this is a bit hard. It uses strange algebra language like “find the nth pattern.” That simply means to find a rule for your pattern that will work however many times you want…or “n” times. (N just stands for any number you want.)

3rd. Go to Function Machine. You should arrive at an activity called Number Cruncher. Again, we are looking for patterns to help you find an algebra equation. These are fairly simple. Put any number in for your input and then it will send out the other number. Put in about 3 or 4 values and look for the pattern. (Did I add, subtract, multiply, divide?)

Finally, return to one-step equations and see how many you can get right today! Be sure to try some subtraction equations, too.

This post is especially for 18 of you…you know who you are! The challenge today is to work together in two areas. The first area to visit is Math Playground. Visit the gaming area. There you will see 2 games on the bottom for algebraic reasoning. Play each of them several times. Notice that on the first game you can play a 3 x 3 grid, or a 4 x 4 grid for a bigger challenge. The 2nd game has 3 different levels of play. I suggest that you try at least 4 challenges on each of the levels. Level 3 is truly challenging. Before leaving this site, write a paragraph or two in your ICE book about your visit to this site.

After visiting this site, go to the One-Step Equation section at XPMath. Play against each other and begin with the one step addition equations. Do at least 2 competitions and record your scores. Next go back into the algebra section and this time pick one-step subtraction equations. Do at least 2 competitions and record your scores. Take a moment and write a paragraph or two in your ICE book about your visit to this site.

Unit 1: Test 2 Help

All math students beware! A math test will occur on Friday, October 7! This test will measure your knowledge of scientific notation (both with positive and negative exponents) and squares and the roots of squares. Read your notes carefully this week. The Stock Market Project

The object of this project is to make money!!! You are given $5,000 to invest in the stocks of your choice. I recommend a portfolio of 3 stocks. We will begin by researching 10 different stocks today. Try to look at their graphs and determine how that stock has performed over the “long run.” Find out its price to earnings ratio. Complete the worksheet by visiting either the Yahoo Finance page or the New York Stock Exchange page. On Yahoo you will find quick and easy information, but you must enter the name of a company to find the information. On NYSE you will find hundreds of pages of listings of companies. Then click on the company to research it. This page is a bit slow to download so you need to be patient. Good luck!
