Who Am I????
I am a musician/mathematician. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance and a Master’s Degree in Pedagogy (a form of education but a fancy name). For many years I owned my own piano studio and taught and performed across the United States. I have been able to perform as a solo pianist with symphony orchestras in 3 different states and have had students win local, state, and national competitions in both piano and voice.
In 1993 one of my children began struggling with 8th grade math. My child had always been a top academic student in school, so I was surprised when trouble came our way. One result of that personal experience was my desire to come into the public school classroom and help with middle school math instruction. I returned to college to take hours and hours of math courses until the state of Arizona certified me in both math and music.
I was a teacher/coach in my prior school and helped to lead our K-8 school in writing curriculum and choosing materials that supported our state standards in Arizona. I am a member of the National Council of Teachers of Math and have been honored to present a class at one of their regional conferences. For the past 2 years I have been recording my teaching, writing, reflecting, and working toward National Certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.
I have a wonderful husband of 37 years, 3 grown children, 2 grandchildren, and a basset hound named Annabel Lee. My hobbies include reading, gardening (which I have found challenging in this state), and I love to renovate old houses. That may become my next career! And of course, I seriously play the piano and enjoy creating music.
